How It All Started
Throughout the years, Harold’s Auto Body has come a long way through perseverance and dedication.
Our humble beginnings were in a leased 3000 sq. ft. shop with four stalls—the staffing consisted of our founder Harold Fjellstrom, his wife Lorraine, and his brother Norm. Eventually, we grew to an owned 10,000 sq. ft. shop that was planned and built by Harold himself.
Harold’s daughter, Michelle, worked part-time in the office during high school, and after graduating from the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology, she joined the company in 1981.
Harold’s youngest son, Cameron, from an early age, followed Harold around like a little shadow, taking in everything his dad did and loved spending time learning and helping in the shop. He joined the company in 1991 and attained his journeyman certificate.
Over the years, the staff grew, many were mentored and trained by Harold and became long-term employees helping the Fjellstrom family grow their business. Harold thought of his employees as family and was always concerned for their well-being and advancement, never forgetting that without them he would not have attained the success he had. Harold had a set of values that highlighted honesty, integrity and quality, and he passed those qualities down to his daughter, Michelle Dupuis, and his son Cameron Fjellstrom.
In the late 90s, Harold and Lorraine started to remove themselves from the everyday running of the shop, as they knew that they had built a strong foundation and had trained and mentored a talented and passionate staff that could carry on what they had started.
In 2003, a succession plan was built, and Michelle and Cameron took over ownership of the business while carrying on Harold’s values and the way he went about doing business. Harold taught them that if they all want to make a living, they have to do things right and treat people fairly. He taught them to be proud of who they are and what they do. To this day, there is a banner in the back of the shop that reminds all of us “Be proud in the way you do your work. Don’t be afraid to tell a customer I fixed your car.”
Why We’re Trusted
To thrive 45 years in this city’s highly competitive auto body industry, you have to do more than a few things right. You have to be honest with people and make sure they are your top priority. You have to communicate with the customer and inform them of exactly what you’re doing to get their vehicle back to pre-accident condition and give them as much help and information as possible to understand the repair and refinishing process and the time frame for repair completion. Most times, it’s a customer’s first time dealing with an auto body shop, and they’re a little shaken and not too sure what to do, so we like to go that extra mile to help them out.
Our customers expect only the best and so do we. We don’t do anything halfway.
We value the relationships we have built with our customers, suppliers, the insurance companies we work with, and our community. We believe in long-term relationships and are dedicated to maintaining and building them.
What Makes Our Service Great
Harold’s Auto Body is staffed by talented, knowledgeable, and passionate employees. Many have been with the company for over five years, and key staff have been with us for 20 to 30 years.
We promote their growth, knowledge, safety and well-being. All technicians are certified journeymen or in the process of completing their apprenticeship through Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training, and the training doesn’t stop there. With the constantly changing technology and methodology required to repair today’s vehicles following OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer’s) repair procedures and standards, training is continuous.
We are actively involved with I-CAR Canada for outside training as we believe training all our employees contributes to our capability to perform complete and safe repairs for the benefit of our customer’s safety.
We’re also environmentally-conscious. We use waterborne paint to reduce solvent emissions and create cleaner air for our community. Our paint department uses a biodegradable masking system, and all paint byproducts are recycled. We also recycle damaged sheet metal, plastic, tires, batteries, anti-freeze, air-conditioning refrigerant and cardboard.
